Fit Note Update!

Patients will not need to get a fit note until they have been off work for more than 28days under temporary measures to free up GP's for the Covid-19 booster programme. The Department for Work and Pensions said that until 26th January, people will be able to self-certify for four weeks rather than being asked to get a note from their GP after one week.

Under the new legislation employers will not be able to ask for proof for workers to claim statutory sick pay until after 28days have passed. Fit notes will also not be needed for benefit claims until 27th January said the DWP upon announcing the new requirements from 17th December.

If employees are self-isolating and cannot work because of Covid-19 they can get an "isolation note" online from NHS 111 as before.

COVID Passports

As of the 17th May the Government plan to publish COVID vaccination history on the NHS app. This data will be pulled nationally in an attempt to divert queries away from GP practices. All patients have to do is download the NHS App and create their own login or ring 119 for paper copies. Please DO NOT contact you GP surgery as we are unable to provide letters showing your COVID-19 vaccination status.

Respiratory Rescue Packs

There has been much activity on social media providing the need for respiratory rescue packs for asthma patients. Please note the clinical advice below:
For asthma patients: patients should not be provided with rescue packs, they need to seek medical assistance as per their asthma action plan. Ask for a GP appointment (which would be triaged on the phone due to COVID-19).

For COPD patients: routine rescue packs should not be given/re-issued without the clinician having a very explicit conversation with the patient distinguishing between symptoms of COVID-19 (for which a rescue pack could actually cause harm) VS symptoms of COPD exacerbation.
